Writing in Public: Writer’s residency at The Future

2018 is a year of many things for me, but it is especially a year to recommit to my creativity. I’ve made a dedication to myself that I will spend more time honing my craft, more time writing and reading. That’s why I am so excited about my upcoming writer’s residency at The Future Minneapolis!

Announcing a Northern Lights Witch Zine

This writer’s residency lasts from January 30 – February 9 at The Future Minneapolis, one of my very favorite little occult shops. Lacey keeps the shop fresh, filled with zines, indie tarot decks, and tinctures from small, independent witchery shops. An artist and writer herself, she has created a beautiful community space to host workshops, gather, and be our best witchy selves.

But what will I be working on during this residency, you ask?

In the last year I have developed an affinity for creative nonfiction, and have even been dabbling in the world of flash memoir. These two things are merging, and I find the more that I want to write about witchcraft the more I find myself examining my own history with the craft.

Last summer, I began outlining a Witchcraft 101 e-book. I quickly realized that there are so many introductory books out there about witchcraft, that adding my own small e-book to the mix didn’t feel terribly impactful. But the idea kept gnawing at me. I knew, deep down, that there was something I wanted to share, and something that was extremely personal.

So the e-book has evolved. There are two things I hope to do with this little chapbook: 1. I hope to help you develop your own personal relationship to witchcraft, and 2. I will share my own, very personal, History of Witchcraft.

This is less a how-to of witchcraft, and more a magickal memoir.

I’ll be sharing some of my most joyful memories, some of my precious baby witchling memories – as well as memories on how the Craft has helped me get through some of the worst times of my life. I don’t want the chapbook to feel static. Yes, there is a huge part of myself in here, a huge part of my own story, but this is also a conversation. I want you to feel like this is a conversation. There will be journaling prompts, guides to creating your own correspondences, and will include small spells and exercises to help you grow in your own witchcraft.

I’m also really excited to announce that this will be more than just an e-book. I’m looking to get this printed as a limited-run physical zine!

The e-book will be available for download on the website, but the zine will give you space to doodle, to answer prompts, to fill in correspondence charts, and personalize your experience with this work as much as you would like. Pre-order a copy of the zine here, which will help me to pay an artist to work with and to pay for the print run. (I am still debating whether or not to do a Kickstarter to bring this project to life in its physical form. I’m hoping to take some time to price out printers and materials while I’m doing the artist residency.)

But this writer’s residency is MORE than about just focusing on the writing! I’ll also be around for tarot readings and other events.

Events during the writer’s residency

Of COURSE you’ll be able to nab a tarot reading from me. I’m doing two full days of readings, and there are still openings. You can grab either a 30-minute reading for $40 or a 60-minute reading + meditation for $60.

30 minute reading: $40
60 minute reading + meditation: $60
SaturdayFebruary 3: 12 – 7
SundayFebruary 4: 12-4

I’m also hosting a DIY Witchcraft 101 workshop on Wednesday, February 7th from 6 – 7:30 pm. In this workshop I’ll walk you through some good resources to begin building your skills as a witch, help you look at your own life through the lens of witchcraft, and teach you some small spells to build confidence. Included in the workshop is a mini-workbook to help you begin your own grimoire of magical correspondences and prompts for getting creative and personalizing your spellcraft.

Tickets for the workshop are a sliding scale of $10 – $20, and you can grab a ticket at The Future’s website. If for whatever reason you aren’t able to pay the sliding scale fee, please just reach out to me via email and I’ll make sure you’re able to join us.

As always, thank you for following me in my journey! I’m excited to have you with me!
